The Humble Beginnings
Believe it or not, this story begins on a goat ranch. Founded in 1990 as “Good Day Ranch,” the place was once home to goats, pigs, donkeys, deer — ordinary farm animals in need of a safe space. But as fate would have it, more exotic rescues began to arrive.
By 1994, the ranch had transformed, renamed as Austin Zoo, and by the turn of the millennium (2000) had officially become a nonprofit sanctuary.
Today, spread across about 15–16 acres (with additional land reserved for future growth), the zoo is home to over 300 animals spanning more than 100 species.
